Checklists Help End Periodontal Disease Treatment Frustration
We used to think we could or should remember everything we needed to know to practice. With the explosion in scientific literature, we need to finally give up on even thinking this is possible. SRP with micro-ultrasonics and the latest instrument technology, antimicrobials, locally administered antibiotics, and referral to the periodontist are all options in treating periodontal disease yet the patient wants ‘just a cleaning.’ This can lead to frustration where you feel really unsure about what to do. All pilots have been taught the importance of using written checklists. Establishing a written checklist/protocol for your individual office, reminders of key steps that can get forgotten or overlooked, can help develop the most effective treatment/flight plan for our patients AND help our patients to want and accept treatment.
